Grand Cayman Airport Wait Times

The estimated wait time is calculated from three inputs: how many passengers are arriving in the current hour (estimated from aircraft type and route-specific load factors), how many immigration officers are staffing the hall at that time of day, and how much of the previous hour's queue is still clearing. The staffing pattern and processing rates come from a Freedom of Information response from Customs and Border Control (June 2026). The estimate shows a range (e.g. 12–17 min) because officer counts vary within each shift window.

The estimate covers immigration processing only, the time from joining the passport control queue to clearing the officer's booth. It does not include the walk from the aircraft to the immigration hall, or baggage collection after clearing immigration.

Automated kiosks are available in the immigration hall and reduce the officer queue load by an estimated 15%, though kiosk users still require a verification check with an officer before exiting.

Immigration wait times at GCM vary significantly by time of day due to the staffing pattern:

• 9:00 am – 11:00 am: 5 officers on duty. Early morning flights from Miami (American, Cayman Airways) and Charlotte (American) arrive in this window. Wait times are typically 10–20 minutes per flight, longer when two flights land within minutes of each other.
• 11:00 am – 5:00 pm: 10–12 officers on duty (peak shift). This is when the majority of US flights arrive: JFK, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Newark, and additional Miami frequencies. Despite higher volume, the doubled staffing keeps wait times at 8–15 minutes for most arrivals. The busiest single hours (3+ simultaneous arrivals, 400+ pax) can push to 20–25 minutes.
• 5:00 pm onwards: 5–7 officers (evening shift). Late afternoon and evening flights from the US East Coast arrive into reduced staffing. If a heavy afternoon hour (500+ pax) bleeds into the evening shift change, waits can reach 20+ minutes.

These are estimates based on the CBC staffing model and real-time flight data. Actual wait times depend on the specific mix of flights, how many passengers require additional screening, and whether the kiosks are operational.

Owen Roberts International handled 633,171 arriving international passengers in 2025, a post-COVID high. The seasonal pattern is consistent year over year:

• Peak season (December–March): The busiest months, driven by US and Canadian winter travel. March is typically the single busiest month (68,983 international arrivals in March 2025) due to spring break overlap. December runs close behind at 67,879.
• Summer shoulder (June–August): A secondary peak driven by family travel. July is the busiest summer month (59,501 arrivals in 2025), roughly 80% of March volume.
• Quiet season (September–October): Hurricane season suppresses travel. September 2025 saw just 27,579 arrivals, 38% of March. This is the easiest time to clear immigration quickly.
• Recovery acceleration: International arrivals have grown from 413,581 (2022) to 591,639 (2023) to 609,376 (2024) to 633,171 (2025), on CIAA figures obtained by Daily.ky under FOI.

Within any given day, the busiest arrival window is typically 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Cayman time, when the bulk of US afternoon departures reach GCM. The quietest period is early morning before 9:00 am and late evening after 8:00 pm.

Owen Roberts International Airport (IATA: GCM, ICAO: MWCR) is Grand Cayman's only commercial airport, located in George Town. It serves approximately 1.3 million passengers per year with a single runway (08/26, 7,867 feet following a 2021 extension) and a single terminal building.

Airlines and routes. GCM is served by 11 airlines on 30 scheduled routes to 23 destinations; schedules change seasonally. Year-round service operates from Miami, New York, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Houston, Washington Dulles, Newark, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Tampa. Seasonal routes add Chicago O'Hare, Minneapolis, Detroit, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore, Orlando, Denver, Austin, Toronto, Ottawa, and London Heathrow. British Airways routes London via a stop in Nassau rather than nonstop. Cayman Airways operates inter-island service to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Route list verified February 2026.

No rental car counters inside the terminal. Unlike most US airports, GCM has no rental desks inside the terminal building. However, most major rental companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, and others) are in a small building directly across the street from the airport, an easy walk from arrivals. Andy's Rent-A-Car is across the airport parking lot, also walkable. No shuttle is needed; you walk to the car.

No public bus to the airport. No bus route enters the airport grounds. Route WB3 passes nearby on Crewe Road but there is no pedestrian connection. Use a taxi from the regulated stand outside arrivals, or arrange a rental car shuttle pickup.

Redevelopment. The terminal was last expanded in 2019, and passenger volumes during peak season now press against its capacity. In May 2025 the government approved a US$91 million redevelopment programme covering new terminal works, a proposed 2,000-foot runway extension into the North Sound (sought by UK carriers that need at least 8,000 feet for larger aircraft), and air traffic control modernisation. An environmental impact assessment with public consultation ran in mid-2025; construction had not started as of mid-2026.
