How Grand Cayman taxi fares work
Cayman Islands taxis are not metered. Fares are set by government regulation under the Traffic (Public Passenger Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 2019, commonly cited as SL 29 of 2019. Every licensed taxi driver on Grand Cayman uses the same formula, which means fares should be consistent from driver to driver for the same route.
The fare formula
The regulated rate structure is:

Key detail: the fare is per ride, not per person, a common point of confusion for visitors. A group of four pays the same as a solo passenger. The fifth passenger adds CI$5.60 / US$7.00 flat. This makes taxis reasonable for groups: splitting a CI$20 ride four ways is CI$5 each, barely more than the CI$2 bus fare.
Finding and booking a taxi
There is no Uber, Lyft, or active ride-hailing app in the Cayman Islands. A local app called Flex operated for a few years but is no longer running. Licensed taxis are found at:
- Owen Roberts International Airport: a regulated taxi stand operates outside the arrivals door. No booking is required; dispatchers assign taxis on a first-come basis.
- George Town cruise port: taxis queue at the tender landing when ships are in port.
- Hotels and resorts: front desks and concierges call taxis on request. Most Seven Mile Beach hotels have taxis available within 5 to 10 minutes.
- Restaurants and bars: staff will call a taxi for you, especially useful at night when no buses run.

Taxis do not cruise for fares the way they do in large cities. If you're at a location without a taxi stand, calling a dispatch or asking a venue to call for you is the standard approach.

The Cayman Islands Government publishes its own taxi fare calculator called CI:GO, available as a mobile app on iOS and Android. CI:GO applies the same SL 29 of 2019 formula. It calculates fares but does not book or dispatch taxis; you still need to find a taxi separately. Tips for cruise and airport visitors
Cruise visitors. Taxis queue at the George Town tender landing. For Seven Mile Beach, expect to pay approximately CI$20 / US$25 one way. If your group has 4 people, that's about US$6 each, comparable to a shuttle excursion but on your own schedule. The return trip is the same fare. For a beach day, ask the driver for a pickup time or get the taxi stand number at the beach.
Airport arrivals. The taxi stand at Owen Roberts operates on a dispatch system. Tell the dispatcher your destination, and you'll be assigned the next available cab. Fares to Seven Mile Beach hotels run CI$20 to CI$26 depending on how far north your hotel is. George Town is about CI$10. East End (Morritt's) is roughly CI$80. The dispatcher should confirm the fare before you get in.
Tipping. Tipping taxi drivers is customary but not mandatory. 10 to 15 percent is standard for good service. Round up to the nearest CI$5 for short trips.
Payment. Most drivers accept US dollars at face value (CI$0.80 = US$1.00, so paying in USD costs slightly more). Some drivers accept credit cards, but cash is safer to assume. ATMs are available at the airport and in George Town.
Late night. Taxis operate 24 hours but availability drops after midnight. Call a dispatch number rather than trying to flag one down at night. There are no buses after 7:00 pm and no ride-hailing apps.
