Do I need a visa to visit the Cayman Islands?

Who can come visa-free, the 109 nationalities that need a visa, the exemptions, and how to apply. Written for anyone planning a trip, and for those of us who live here and are inviting family or friends.

The short answer

  • Most Western visitors don't need a visa. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada and EU countries, among many others, can visit visa-free.
  • 109 nationalities do need one, including some that surprise people: South Korea, Qatar, the UAE, Uruguay, Thailand and Ukraine. Peru and Venezuela joined the list in April 2026. Check the full list below.
  • Key exemptions: permanent residents of the US, Canada or the UK flying in directly from that country with a return ticket, and Jamaican, Indian and Chinese nationals holding a valid US, Canadian or UK visa who arrive directly from the country that issued it. Expect up to 30 days under these exemptions.
  • The visa costs CI$92 (US$112.20) and is applied for online. There is no visa on arrival and no ETA-style travel authorisation.
  • Apply at least two weeks ahead. Processing is 7 to 10 working days, and you can apply up to three months before travel.
  • Visitors can stay up to six months, with an extension possible after that.

Which nationalities need a visa?

This is CBC's list of the main visa-required countries. If your nationality is on it, you need a visitor's visa before you travel, unless one of the exemptions applies. If your nationality is not named in either column of CBC's table (visa required or visa not required), check with CBC before you travel.

New in 2026: nationals of Peru and Venezuela have needed a visa since 2 April 2026, when the Amendment Regulations took them off the visa-free list (Cayman News Service reported the change on 31 March).

South Sudan is not in either column of CBC's table. Under the Regulations, only the nationalities they name are visa-free and everyone else needs a visa, so South Sudanese nationals need one unless an exemption applies.

Worth knowing: Hong Kong SAR passport holders are visa-free, and so are Taiwan passport holders, but only with an ordinary passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that includes the personal identification number. Nationals of the People's Republic of China need a visa (Macao SAR is on the list too). Any visa national aged 71 or over no longer needs a police clearance.

Exemptions: when a visa national doesn't need one

Even if your nationality is on the list, you can visit without a Cayman visa if one of these applies:

  • Permanent residents of the US, Canada or the UK don't need a Cayman visa if they fly in directly from that country (Canadian permanent residents may also come via the US), show proof of permanent residence on arrival (for the US, your green card), and hold a return ticket to that country. Living there on a work, student or visitor visa doesn't count. You can stay up to 30 days.
  • You are Jamaican, Indian or Chinese (PRC) and hold a valid US, Canadian or UK visa, and you arrive directly from the country that issued it.
  • You are Jamaican and aged 14 and under, or 71 and over.
  • You hold a Cayman work permit, are named on a work permit as the holder's dependant, have permission to reside permanently, or hold a valid re-entry permit.
  • You are exempt from needing a work permit under section 53 of the Caymanian Protection Act (formerly the Immigration (Transition) Act), or are the dependant of such a person.

Entries under the US, Canada and UK residence exemptions and the Jamaica, India and China visa-holder exemption are limited to 30 days, not the six months a visa-free visitor can get. CBC's pages also apply the 30-day limit to young and older Jamaicans, so expect up to 30 days there too. If your family member wants to stay longer, they should apply for a visa instead.

Cruise passengers and transit

Cayman keeps a separate transit visa list. If your nationality needs a visitor's visa but is not on the transit list, you can pass through without a visa as long as you have a valid travel document and an onward ticket to a destination other than the country you just arrived from, and you leave within 24 hours. If your nationality is on the transit list, you need a transit visa even for a connection between flights.

The Regulations exempt some transit-list nationals from that requirement. Since 2 April 2026 the exemptions cover a passenger arriving to join a cruise ship as crew within 24 hours; a passenger who, "within twenty-four hours of arrival in the Islands by a cruise ship", will "transfer to another cruise ship and leave the Islands", "leave the Islands on the same cruise ship" or "leave from the Islands by air"; someone repairing equipment or carrying out engineering services for no more than 24 hours; and operational crew of a commercial airline (including a privately operated one), a private jet charter, or an air ambulance provided for a recognised health facility.

The same-ship cruise exemption is new in the 2026 amendment. CBC's transit visa page carries the new wording, but its visitor visa FAQ still says cruise passengers stopping for the day need a visa if their nationality is on the transit list. Until the two agree, if you are arriving by cruise or connecting through Cayman and your nationality is on either list, check with Customs and Border Control before you travel: Visa.Queries@gov.ky or 1-345-949-4579 (option 3). For what to do on the day, see our cruise day guide.

How to apply for a visitor's visa

  • Online, through the Customs and Border Control visa portal. Jamaicans living in Jamaica can also apply using a kiosk at the Cayman Islands Visa Office, Suite 2, Winchester Business Park, 15 Hope Road, Kingston. There is no visa on arrival.
  • When: no earlier than three months before you travel, and at least two weeks before. CBC quotes 7 to 10 working days.
  • Fee: CI$92 (US$112.20) by card. American Express is not accepted. The fee is non-refundable.
  • Documents:
    • a passport photo;
    • a recent bank statement;
    • proof of employment or studies;
    • a passport valid for at least six months;
    • an original police clearance certificate, signed and sealed, less than six months old, from your last country of residence (not needed if you are 71 or over);
    • a birth certificate for anyone under 18.
  • What you get: a single-entry visa, valid for three months. A multiple-entry visa is at the officer's discretion and costs the same.
  • If you are refused, you must wait 12 months before applying again, unless the visa officer shortens that period. The fee is not refunded.
  • Don't buy flights until the visa is approved.

If you live here and are sponsoring a visitor: CBC says a sponsor may be required "to give an undertaking in writing to be responsible for that tourist visitor's maintenance and accommodation during the period of his stay in the Islands". The sponsor is also "required by law to inform the Director of Customs and Border Control within twenty-four hours of the expiration of the grant of permission if the tourist visitor in question has failed to depart from the Islands before the expiration of the permission granted."

Once you're here

  • Length of stay: visitors can stay up to six months. The immigration officer at the airport decides how long to give you.
  • Extensions: CI$50 for the first extension and CI$100 for each one after that, or nil for the spouse, civil partner or child of a Caymanian. The online extension portal is currently unavailable, so apply in person at the Customs and Border Control office, 94A Elgin Avenue, George Town, before your permitted stay runs out.
  • Passport: if you don't need a visa, your passport must be valid beyond your return date. (Visa applicants need six months' validity when they apply.)
  • Onward ticket: you need a return or onward ticket, and you may be asked to show you can support yourself during your stay.
  • CBD and THC: cannabis products, including CBD with any THC, are illegal to bring in without the right paperwork. Read our cannabis and CBD guide before you pack.

Methodology and sources

This page is based on the Customs and Border Control (Visas, Entry and Landing) Regulations (2025 Revision), as amended by the Amendment Regulations 2026 (in force 2 April 2026), the Customs and Border Control (CBC) pages on gov.ky, and Cayman News Service's report of the 2026 change, all checked on 18 October 2026. Where CBC's pages and the Regulations differ, we say so. CBC's pages carry no last-updated date, so rules and fees can change without notice; confirm with CBC before booking. Questions: Visa.Queries@gov.ky or 1-345-949-4579 (option 3).

Last updated: 19 October 2026.

Waiting on answers: We have asked Customs and Border Control about Rwanda, Gabon and Togo, South Sudan, cruise passengers and the Kingston application kiosks. We'll update this page when they reply. Until then, where the rules are unclear, this page takes the cautious reading.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit the Cayman Islands?

Most visitors don't. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada and EU countries, and most other Western nationalities, can visit visa-free for up to six months. 109 nationalities need a visitor's visa, applied for online in advance, unless they qualify for an exemption. Only in specific cases. Permanent residents of the US, Canada or the UK don't need a Cayman visa if they fly in directly from that country (Canadian permanent residents may also come via the US), show proof of permanent residence on arrival (for the US, the green card), and hold a return ticket to that country. Living there on a work, student or visitor visa doesn't count. Separately, nationals of Jamaica, India and China (PRC) with a valid US, Canadian or UK visa can enter visa-free if they arrive directly from the country that issued it. Expect up to 30 days under any of these exemptions.

How much does a Cayman Islands visitor visa cost?

CI$92 (US$112.20), paid online by card when you apply (American Express is not accepted). The fee is non-refundable, including if the visa is refused. Multiple-entry visas, granted at the officer's discretion, cost the same.

How long does a Cayman visa take?

Customs and Border Control quotes 7 to 10 working days. Apply at least two weeks before you travel, no earlier than three months before, and do not buy flights until the visa is approved.

Do cruise passengers need a visa for the Cayman Islands?

Since 2 April 2026 the Regulations exempt a passenger who arrives by cruise ship from the transit visa requirement if, within 24 hours of arrival, they leave on the same cruise ship, transfer to another cruise ship and leave, or leave by air. CBC's visitor visa FAQ still says cruise passengers need a visa if their nationality is on the transit list, so if yours is, confirm with Customs and Border Control (Visa.Queries@gov.ky) before you sail.
