Mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands
The question visitors actually ask is "is it safe, and do I need bug spray?" The short version: there is no local dengue or Zika outbreak, the islands run one of the most aggressive mosquito-control programs in the Caribbean, and a bottle of repellent still earns its place in your bag from May to November.
The short answer
- No local outbreak. There is no evidence of active dengue or Zika cases in Cayman; neither disease is endemic here, and Public Health monitors physician reports weekly, year-round.
- Yes, bring repellent for evenings and the wet season (May to November). DEET or picaridin both work; reef-safe sunscreen goes on first, repellent second.
- Seven Mile Beach is the easy zone. Sea breeze plus intensive control means resort areas are usually comfortable; mangrove edges and the eastern interior after rain are a different story.
- The MRCU is a Cayman institution. A dedicated government unit has been fighting mosquitoes here since 1965 with trap networks, ground fogging, and its own aircraft, treating where the trap data says.
- The two mosquitoes that matter: Aedes aegypti (the potential dengue and Zika carrier, target of the control program) and the black salt-marsh mosquito (harmless to your health, ferocious to your ankles).
Is there dengue or Zika in Cayman right now?
No local outbreak. Dengue is not endemic to the Cayman Islands, health officials report no community transmission, and no locally acquired cases have been detected this year. What does turn up is the occasional imported case: travellers returning from affected countries have brought in several dengue cases and one case of Oropouche fever, which is exactly what the surveillance system exists to catch. The most recent notable year was 2023, when 18 dengue cases were recorded, about half imported. Zika has not had local transmission reported here in years. Public Health runs year-round surveillance with weekly monitoring of physician reports, local PCR testing for dengue, Zika, chikungunya and Oropouche (results within about 24 hours), so if the picture changes, it is announced.
What does happen periodically: regional advisories. When countries in the region (Cuba, for example) confirm outbreaks of mosquito-borne viruses, the HSA issues travel advisories reminding residents travelling there to take precautions and to watch for symptoms on return. That is an advisory about travel elsewhere, not about conditions in Cayman, and it is worth reading it that way when a headline crosses your feed.
When is mosquito season?
Broadly, the wet season: May to November, which is also hurricane season. The trigger is rain. Grand Cayman's interior includes large areas of mangrove swamp, and heavy rainfall hatches salt-marsh mosquito broods in waves a few days after a soaking. December to April, the dry season, is dramatically quieter, which is part of why winter is peak tourist season. Dusk and the hour after are the worst window on any given day; midday beach hours are rarely a problem.
The two mosquitoes that matter
Aedes aegypti is the one health authorities care about: it can carry dengue, Zika and chikungunya, it breeds in small containers of standing water around homes (plant saucers, buckets, blocked gutters), and it bites during the day. It is present and widespread on Grand Cayman, which is exactly why the control program and surveillance exist even with no active disease. Emptying standing water around your home is the single most useful thing residents do.
Aedes taeniorhynchus, the black salt-marsh mosquito, is the swarm you may meet near mangroves after rain. It does not transmit dengue or Zika here; it is a nuisance biter, historically an epic one. It breeds in the swamps by the millions, flies at dusk, and is the main target of the aerial operations.
The MRCU: why Cayman is livable at all
Before organised control began in 1965, Grand Cayman was infamous as one of the most mosquito-infested places on earth: accounts from the era describe clouds thick enough to smother livestock, and life on the island was scheduled around the swarms. The Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) changed that, and it remains a full government unit with its own research program, trap network across the islands, ground fogging fleet, and fixed-wing aircraft for treating the swamps.
Two practical things to know about how it works. First, there is no public spraying schedule: the MRCU decides where to treat from its island-wide trap counts, rainfall and breeding activity, announcing operations through its channels as they happen. Second, control is why the resort corridor feels mosquito-free in a way that surprises people who know the Caribbean; the program is concentrated where people are.
What to actually do about them

- Dusk discipline: long sleeves or a re-application at sunset beats slapping through dinner on a patio.
- Residents: tip out standing water weekly (plant saucers, toys, tarps, gutters). Aedes aegypti breeds within metres of where it bites, and container-dumping does more for your own yard than any fogging pass.
- Screens and fans: moving air is a cheap force field; salt-marsh mosquitoes are weak fliers.
