Rainy Day in Grand Cayman: Indoor Things to Do

The short answer

• See a film. The Camana Bay Cinema is the only movie theatre in the Cayman Islands: seven screens, including three VIP auditoriums with reclining seats and a bar, Dolby Atmos, and 4K projection.
• Free art. The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (Esterly Tibbetts Highway) has free admission, open 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
• Island history. The Cayman Islands National Museum in George Town is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm. Admission is US$15 for visiting adults and US$10 for children 6 to 12 and seniors; children 5 and under are free (residents pay CI$10 and CI$5).
• Shop and eat under cover. Camana Bay has shops, restaurants, and covered walkways, so it is an easy place to wait out a shower.
• Go behind the scenes. The Cayman Spirits Company distillery tour (Grand Cayman's only distillery) and Tortuga's free rum-cake bakery tour are dry, indoor, and end with a tasting.
• Good to know: rain here is usually brief and passing. An indoor stop often outlasts the shower, and the sun is frequently back within the hour.

Stay completely dry

These are fully indoor and the safest bets when it is really coming down.

• Camana Bay Cinema. The island's only cinema, with seven screens (three VIP auditoriums with reclining armchairs and a full-service bar), Dolby Atmos sound, and 4K projection. A good few hours for adults and older kids alike.
• National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. Free admission, open 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday (closed Sundays and public holidays), on Esterly Tibbetts Highway. Rotating exhibitions of Caymanian and Caribbean art.
• Cayman Islands National Museum. In George Town at 64 Seafarers Way, open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm (last admission 45 minutes before closing). It covers Cayman's natural and social history. Visitor admission is US$15 (adults), US$10 (children 6 to 12 and seniors), free for children 5 and under; residents pay CI$10 and CI$5.
• Shops and dining at Camana Bay. The waterfront town has shops, cafes, and restaurants with covered walkways, so you can browse and eat without getting soaked.
• Cayman Spirits Company Distillery tour. Grand Cayman's only distillery, at 68 Bronze Road in George Town, runs the guided Distiller's Tour of its 5,000-square-foot facility (a 1,200-gallon copper pot still, the Bobo's Vodka column still, and the original still behind Seven Fathoms Rum), ending in the tasting room with samples of Seven Fathoms Rum, Bobo's Vodka, Governor's Reserve Rum, and distillery-only specials. About 45 to 60 minutes, US$20 per person; advance booking is recommended.
• Tortuga Rum Cake bakery tour. Tortuga runs free guided tours of its rum-cake bakery on North Sound Road in George Town, with samples; book a time online at tortuga.ky. Short, dry, and family-friendly.
• Camana Bay Observation Tower. Free and usually open to the public during regular hours; climb the mosaic-tiled spiral staircase for a view across Grand Cayman. Indoors and quick.
• 1981 Brewing Co Tap Room. A small George Town brewery taproom pouring fresh tank-to-glass Cayman beer and cider, open Thursday and Friday 2pm to 7pm (happy hour 4pm to 6pm) and Saturday noon to 5pm. A dry, low-key spot to wait out a shower (adults).

Rainy day with kids

Short, indoor, and easy to reach are the priorities with children.

• A movie at the Camana Bay Cinema is the simplest reset for a washed-out morning.
• The National Museum is compact and hands-on enough for school-age children, and entry is free for children 5 and under.
• Camana Bay itself, with covered walkways, casual dining, and open space to move around between showers, works well for restless little ones.
• The Tortuga rum-cake bakery tour and the Camana Bay Observation Tower are short, free or low-cost, and easy with children.

Partly covered, weather permitting

These can work in light rain but are not fully sheltered, so check conditions first.

• Cayman Crystal Caves (Old Man Bay, north side). The caves themselves are sheltered, but the guided visit walks outdoor forest paths between three caves, so on a genuinely wet day we would skip it and save it for a dry day.
