Seven Mile Beach Parking, Public Access & Sunset Spots

The short answer

• Every beach is public and parking across Grand Cayman is free, so the question is just which access point.
• Seven Mile Public Beach (south end) is the main, most developed public access; the best all-rounder.
• Governor's Beach (central) is a popular, classic sunset spot.
• The beach faces west, so the sunset is good from anywhere along it. If the lots are full, park free at Camana Bay and walk across.
• Bring bug spray. Mosquitoes and sandflies come out at dusk, so apply repellent before the sun sets.

The public access points and their parking

• Seven Mile Public Beach (southern end, just south of the Kimpton Seafire) is the main, most developed access: free parking and on-site beach facilities, plus a free public outdoor-fitness (calisthenics) park added by the Government on the Crown-land site. It is also the busiest, so it fills first. You can reserve a cabana in advance through the Government's public-beaches booking portal (linked below).
• Governor's Beach (central, beside the Governor's Residence) has free parking and is one of the most popular sunset spots, without being as crowded as Public Beach.
• West Bay Public Beach (quiet north end) has free parking and is the most laid-back of the named points.
• Cemetery Beach (West Bay end, just past Seven Mile Beach proper) has a smaller free lot that can fill in peak season and is popular for shore snorkeling on the reef just offshore.

Beyond the named lots, there is usually parking at Jack's and next door at the former Royal Palms site (now closed), and you can park along West Bay Road at the many designated public beach-access points up and down Seven Mile Beach.

Catching the sunset

Seven Mile Beach runs along Grand Cayman's western shore and faces west, which is why it is famous for its sunsets, and why any of the access points above works. Governor's Beach is the classic sunset spot; Seven Mile Public Beach is the better choice if you want more on-site facilities close by while you wait. Aim to arrive around half an hour before sunset to find a parking spot and settle in, and bring your own towel and water, since facilities thin out in the evening.

Bring bug spray: mosquitoes come out at dusk

Grand Cayman's mosquitoes and sandflies are most active in the still air around dawn and dusk, so the half hour you spend waiting for the sunset is exactly when they come out. Spray on repellent before the sun goes down, not after they have found you, and reapply if you are staying past dark. Calm, low-wind evenings are the worst, as are spots near standing water or the vegetation behind the beach; an open stretch of sand with a breeze off the sea is the most comfortable. The island's Mosquito Research and Control Unit keeps numbers down year-round, but the dusk window on the beach is still when you will notice them most, so it is worth keeping a small bottle of repellent in the car or beach bag.

If the lots are full: park and walk

On a busy afternoon the beach lots can fill. The reliable fallback is Camana Bay, which offers free parking in its garages: the Solaris Avenue garage is free to the public, and the Forum Lane garage is open to the public on its lower levels through the day and fully after 5pm on weekdays and all weekend. From there it is a short walk across to the beach. It is a walk to the shoreline rather than steps from it, but it is the dependable overflow option.

One practical note: the public-beach lots are unstaffed public areas, so do not leave valuables in the car, and treat them as daytime-to-dusk parking.
