Tipped jobs are counted apart: 191 adverts for jobs paid gratuities, 125 (65%) starting at a minimum-wage floor, 46 of them at the CI$6.56 tipped rate. The law lets these jobs start lower and tips make up much of the pay, so they sit outside every pay figure on this page.

Two new hotels posted about one in eight openings

Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman (advertised as PB Employee Co Ltd) and ONE|GT (advertised as ONE GT Services Limited), the George Town hotel that opened this year, listed 418 positions between them. The Grand Hyatt had posted 2 adverts in August and none in September. Its biggest calls in October:

  • Cook 56
  • Food and beverage server 40
  • Bartender 24
  • Rooms back of house employee 18
  • Chef de partie 14
  • Bell attendant 13

How this report works

  • Advertised, not paid. Figures are the salary ranges employers put on their adverts. What a hire is actually paid can differ.
  • Scope. Every advert the WORC JobsCayman board posted between 1 and 31 October: 1,731 adverts. A role advertised again counts again (173 re-advertisements).
  • One pay sample. Every pay figure uses the same 1,470 full-time adverts with usable pay for jobs not paid gratuities. Left out: 191 tipped adverts (above), 55 part-time or temporary, 14 with no occupation code, 1 with implausible pay.
  • Pay. The midpoint of each advert’s range, per year, in CI$. 155 adverts priced in US$ are converted at CI$1 = US$1.20. Medians: half of adverts offer more, half less.
  • Minimum wage. An advert counts when the bottom of its range, as an hourly rate at the advert’s stated hours (45 a week if none), is no more than CI$8.75.
  • Jobs and groups. Occupation groups are the ISCO-08 major groups behind WORC’s occupation codes. Job titles are grouped by spelling and by the role named first (“Janitor/Cleaner” counts as Janitor); a job needs 10 or more adverts for its own median.
  • One-employer flags. A job is marked when one employer posted 25% or more of its adverts, or holds 30% or more of its positions.
  • Positions are the openings each advert lists; one September advert listing 9,129 openings counts as one.
  • September. Our daily pull of the board began on 7 September. Every advert stays up for at least 16 days (almost all for 21), so September adverts posted before then were still live and counted. A few withdrawn within days may be missing: 8 of October’s 1,731 closed within a week.
