Returning a Rental Car at Grand Cayman Airport

The short answer

• Return it full. Cars come with a full tank and must go back full, or you pay a refuel fee well above the pump price.
• Fill up cheap on the way. There is a Refuel station right by the airport, usually among the island's cheapest. Coming from Seven Mile Beach, fill up near you; the short hop will not move the gauge.
• Drop where you collected it. If you picked the car up at the airport, you return it to the same lot, beside the single terminal, a short walk from departures. No shuttle.
• Arrive in good time. Cayman Airways advises three to four hours before an international flight; in practice about two is usually enough off-peak. Add time for the car drop.

Refuel before you return: the full-tank rule

Rental cars in Grand Cayman run on a full-to-full policy. You collect the car with a full tank and are expected to bring it back full. Return it short and the company tops it up for you, but at a fuel rate noticeably higher than the pump, plus sometimes a service charge. Avis Cayman, for instance, explicitly recommends refuelling before you return the car for exactly this reason.

So the money-saving move is to fill up yourself before drop-off, at the cheapest station near you. Staff check the fuel gauge when you hand the car back.

Where to fill up, and for how much

You do not need to hunt for fuel near the airport. There is a Refuel station right by Owen Roberts International, and it is consistently one of the cheapest on the island, so it makes an easy last top-up before you hand the car back.

Two things worth knowing, because fuel here is unregulated and prices vary a lot between stations:

• Refuel is usually the cheapest brand, both the airport branch and the Seven Mile Beach one on West Bay Road. Pricier stations can run CI$0.70 or more per gallon higher for the same fuel.
• Coming from Seven Mile Beach? Just fill up near you before you set off. The drive to the airport is short enough that it will not drop the gauge enough to matter, and the SMB Refuel is typically the lowest price on the island.

Where to drop the car

If you picked the car up at the airport, you return it to the exact same lot. Owen Roberts has a single terminal, and the major rental companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, Andy's, Marshall's, and others) operate from lots at or directly beside it, an easy walk from the departures hall with no shuttle required.

Follow the "rental car return" signs back to your company's lot, not the curbside drop-off. If instead you rented from a town or hotel location, check in advance whether they accept airport returns and where. Either way the exact spot is on your rental agreement, and staff check the car and fuel gauge when you hand it back.

How early should you arrive?

Use Cayman Airways' guidance as your baseline, then add time for the car drop-off:

• International flights: arrive three to four hours before departure (two to three hours if you have checked in online, for passport and bag drop). Check-in closes one hour before departure.
• Domestic jet flights: check-in closes one hour before departure.
• Sister Islands Express (Twin Otter and Saab to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman): check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.
• All flights: boarding closes 15 minutes before departure. Miss it and you do not travel.

Those are Cayman Airways' official figures, and they lean cautious. Outside the busy winter season, and when you are not also dropping a rental car, around two hours is usually plenty for an international flight. Give yourself the full three to four hours during peak periods, on cruise-heavy mornings, or whenever you still have a car to return.
