Saharan Dust in the Cayman Islands: Season and Health Guide

What the Saharan Air Layer is, when its dusty plumes reach Cayman, how the islands track and warn about it, what it does to air quality, the skies and even the hurricane season, and how to protect yourself.

The short answer

  • What it is: the Saharan Air Layer, a mass of hot, dry, dusty air that blows off the Sahara Desert and crosses the Atlantic every few days in summer, carrying fine desert dust thousands of miles to the Caribbean.

What the Saharan dust layer is

The dust begins as fine sand and mineral particles lifted high into the atmosphere by storms over the Sahara Desert. Warm, dry air carries it westward in a distinct layer a couple of miles thick that meteorologists call the Saharan Air Layer. Every few days through the summer, a fresh pulse of this dusty air rides the trade winds across the Atlantic, a journey of roughly five thousand miles, and some of it reaches the Caribbean and the Cayman Islands. NASA and NOAA estimate the Sahara sends more than 100 million tonnes of dust across the Atlantic in a typical year.

Two things make the layer matter beyond the dust itself: it is extremely dry, and it carries strong winds. Both shape the weather, as below. And this is a regional phenomenon, not something specific to Cayman: the same plumes reach the wider Caribbean, Florida, and parts of Central and South America.

When it usually reaches Cayman

Saharan dust is a summer visitor. Outbreaks occur roughly between May and October, and the layer is at its most active and dust-laden from about mid-June through mid-August. Outside those months the air over Cayman is usually clear of it.

It arrives in pulses rather than as a constant haze. A plume typically builds over a day, sits over the islands for two to four days, and then clears as the dusty air moves on, until the next pulse follows. Some summers bring frequent, thick plumes; others are lighter. In 2026 Cayman has already seen several notable plumes and Dust alerts.

How the islands track and warn about it

Two agencies handle Saharan dust locally. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service issues a Dust alert when a significant plume is forecast, and the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability and the Public Health Department issue a public health advisory alongside it, with precautions for residents.

These local warnings draw on regional forecasting. NOAA tracks the Saharan Air Layer by satellite across the whole Atlantic, so the dust is watched for days as it approaches the Caribbean. That lead time is why an alert can go out before the plume arrives, rather than only once the sky has already turned hazy.

What Saharan dust affects

  • Air quality and health. The plume raises the level of fine particles in the air. Many people notice nothing, but the dust can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and chest, bringing on coughing, wheezing, a sore throat or shortness of breath. Young children, older adults, and people with asthma, allergies or chronic respiratory conditions are most at risk.
  • Hazy skies and vivid sunsets. Dust scatters sunlight, so a plume turns the normally deep-blue Cayman sky milky or whitish, softens the horizon and can cut visibility. The same scattering paints unusually rich red and orange sunrises and sunsets, the one upside of a dusty spell.
  • A quieter hurricane season. This is the meteorological headline. Because the Saharan Air Layer is so dry and carries such strong winds, it makes it harder for tropical storms and hurricanes to form or strengthen. Busy dust periods in June and July often line up with a lull in Atlantic tropical activity; as the dust eases in late summer, that brake comes off, which is part of why the peak of hurricane season comes later.
  • A film on everything. During a thick plume, a fine layer of dust settles on cars, windows, patios and outdoor furniture.
  • A possible link to sargassum. Researchers have investigated whether the iron and nutrients in Saharan dust, once deposited into the ocean, help fertilise the sargassum blooms that also reach Cayman in summer. This is an area of study rather than a settled fact, but the two summer phenomena overlap in timing.

How to protect yourself

When a Dust alert is in effect, the standard public health guidance is straightforward:

  • Limit time outdoors, especially strenuous activity, while the dust is heavy.
  • Keep windows and doors closed to reduce how much dust gets indoors.
  • Run air conditioning on the recirculate setting, or use an air purifier if you have one.
  • Sensitive groups (children, older adults, and anyone with asthma or a respiratory condition) should keep any inhaler or medication handy and take extra care.
  • See a doctor if breathing problems are severe or persistent.
