Sargassum in Grand Cayman: Season and Beach Guide
What sargassum is, when it arrives, which Cayman coasts it hits and which stay clear, how businesses manage it, and how to read our daily Sargassum Outlook before you pick a beach.
The short answer
- Season: sargassum usually reaches Cayman between April and October, heaviest in the summer (roughly June to September). January to March is the clearest window.
- Which coasts: the windward east and south shores (East End, South Sound) beach first and worst. Seven Mile Beach, on the leeward west side, is usually spared because the prevailing easterly winds push the seaweed the other way.
- It is patchy, not island-wide: a buried east-coast beach does not mean the whole island is affected. On the same day, the west coast is often clear.
- It comes and goes: landings shift with the wind over a day or two, and resorts clear affected beaches.

What sargassum is
Sargassum is a brown, free-floating seaweed that lives on the open ocean rather than attached to the seabed. Out at sea it is valuable habitat for turtles, fish, and seabirds. The problem is one of scale: since 2011 a vast recurring bloom known as the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has formed across the tropical Atlantic each year, stretching at its peak from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean currents and winds carry pieces of it into the Caribbean, where it can pile up on beaches and, as it rots, give off the strong sulphur smell people associate with it.
This is a regional Caribbean phenomenon, not something specific to Cayman. The same belt drives the seaweed seen in Mexico, Barbados, and across the wider region.
When it arrives
For Cayman, arrivals generally run from April through October, with the heaviest landings in the summer months, roughly June to September. The cooler, drier first quarter of the year (January to March) is usually the lowest-sargassum window and tends to have the clearest water.
Each year is different. The amount that reaches Cayman depends on how large the open-ocean bloom is that season and on the winds and currents that steer it. Recent years have brought unusually heavy regional blooms, and scientists at the University of South Florida, who monitor the belt by satellite, flagged 2026 as shaping up to be a notably heavy year for the Caribbean.
Which Cayman beaches are affected
The single most useful thing to understand is that sargassum lands on the windward side of each island. Grand Cayman sits in steady easterly trade winds for most of the year, so:
- East End and the south coast (South Sound) are hit first and hardest. They face into the wind, which drives the floating mats ashore.
- Seven Mile Beach is usually spared. It faces west, in the lee of the island, so the same winds keep the seaweed off it. This is the main reason Cayman's best-known beach often stays clear while the east coast is covered.
- North Side and the Sister Islands fall in between and depend on the day's wind.
Because it is wind-driven, the picture changes within a day or two as the wind shifts, and it is genuinely patchy: two beaches a few miles apart can look completely different on the same morning.
Sargassum does not make the island "unvisitable"
It is easy to see a single dramatic photo of a buried beach and assume the whole island is unusable. That is not how it works. Sargassum is uneven by coast, by week, and by wind. On a day when East End is heavy, the leeward west coast, including Seven Mile Beach, is frequently clear. A heavy morning can also ease by the afternoon if the wind turns.
If you are visiting during the season, the practical takeaway is to stay flexible about which beach you choose on a given day rather than writing off the trip. Checking the outlook the night before, and being willing to switch coasts, is usually all it takes.
How businesses and the islands manage it
Sargassum management in Cayman is, for now, handled largely property by property. According to Cayman Compass reporting, hoteliers have been dealing with the influx themselves while looking to government for more help, and there is not yet a comprehensive national clean-up plan; a large offshore barrier has been floated as one option, and government has said it is exploring more proactive strategies to intercept the seaweed before it lands.
Front-line beaches, especially on the east coast, see hands-on management. Guests at East End resorts report that staff step up beach cleaning during heavy influxes. Cayman Compass has also reported that a coastal-works licence was granted for a groyne and swim-area excavation at the Wyndham Reef Resort in East End as one site-level response.

Our daily outlook, and how to read it
Our Sargassum Outlook is built in two layers.

- Regional outlook (NOAA). We use NOAA and USF's experimental Sargassum Inundation Risk product, which uses satellite data to estimate how much sargassum is floating within about 50 km of the coast. It tells you how much is near the island, not whether any is on a specific beach. It is experimental and is not a forecast.
- Local outlook (Daily.ky). On top of that, we apply the 24-to-48-hour wind forecast: when offshore levels are high, we flag the coasts that face into the coming wind as the ones most likely to receive seaweed, and the leeward coasts as sheltered. It is an educated guide for the next day or two, not a guarantee. Actual landfall also depends on tide and currents, and it applies to the open coast only.
Together they answer the real question, "which coast should I go to," better than either the regional map or the local wind alone.
Methodology and sources
The offshore-risk data is the experimental Sargassum Inundation Risk product from NOAA AOML / CoastWatch and the University of South Florida, which also monitors the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt by satellite. Wind in our local outlook is a 24-to-48-hour forecast. Sargassum-removal guidance is from the Cayman Islands Department of Environment. Reporting on Cayman's recent influxes, the management gap, and site-level responses is from Cayman Compass; belt background draws on USF, NASA, and the US EPA. The windward-and-leeward pattern reflects Cayman's prevailing easterly winds. Conditions change quickly with the wind, so treat any outlook as indicative and check the day before.
