How Early Should You Arrive at Grand Cayman Airport (GCM)?

The short answer

• International flights: the Cayman Islands Airports Authority recommends two hours before departure, and two and a half hours at peak (Friday to Sunday, 12:00pm to 2:30pm). Cayman Airways recommends three to four hours for its international jet flights. The airline is the more conservative of the two.
• The hard cutoffs are the same either way: airport check-in closes one hour before departure, and boarding closes 15 minutes before departure, on every flight. Miss either and you cannot travel.
• Carry-on only and checked in online? Two hours is usually enough on a quiet morning, but it is the airport's floor, not a buffer. You still clear security, and the one-hour and 15-minute deadlines still apply.
• Domestic flights to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman: arrive 90 minutes before. Check-in closes one hour before on jet service and 30 minutes before on the Twin Otter and Saab aircraft.

The official numbers, side by side

Two sources publish guidance, and they do not fully agree. The airport authority sets the floor; the airline pads it for its own check-in and bag handling.

• Cayman Islands Airports Authority (the airport): two hours before international departures, two and a half hours during peak hours (Friday to Sunday, 12:00pm to 2:30pm), and 90 minutes before domestic flights.
• Cayman Airways (the airline): arrive three to four hours before international jet flights. If you check in online, you still must be at the airport at least two to three hours before departure for document verification and to check bags.
• Check-in closes: one hour before departure for international and domestic jet flights, and 30 minutes before departure for the Twin Otter and Saab aircraft serving the Sister Islands.
• Boarding closes: 15 minutes before scheduled departure, for all flights.

So how early should you actually arrive?

For a 1:30pm flight: that falls inside the airport's peak window (Friday to Sunday, 12:00pm to 2:30pm), so the airport's own guidance is two and a half hours, putting you there around 11:00am. Cayman Airways would have you there earlier still. If your 1:30pm is midweek, two hours is the airport's baseline.

Is two hours enough? On a quiet, off-peak departure with online check-in and carry-on only, yes. The risk is the fixed deadlines: bag drop and check-in shut one hour out, and the gate closes 15 minutes out. If the live departure traffic above is busy, give yourself more.

Is three hours too much? The airline does not think so for international jets. The airport's shorter two to two and a half hours is usually comfortable outside peak times. Three hours is rarely wasted on a Friday-to-Sunday midday flight; it can feel long on a quiet midweek morning.

Security and what you can carry

Since late 2025, Owen Roberts has used new CT cabin-baggage scanners (plus bottle-liquid scanners), rolled out from September to November 2025, so you no longer take laptops, other electronics, or your liquids out of your bag at the checkpoint. This has noticeably cut the security queues. Standard limits of 100ml (3oz) per liquid container in a clear resealable bag still apply for now, so pack to that, but you can leave them in your carry-on through the scanner; larger containers may still be checked.

There is a duty-free area after passenger screening, where Jacques Scott and Tortuga run duty-free liquor shops. The airport notes that for most destinations anything bought after screening can be taken onboard, so if you want local rum to take home, buying it airside avoids the liquids limit. Confirm allowances for your final destination, especially if you connect through the United States.

Flying to Cayman Brac or Little Cayman

Domestic Sister Islands flights are quicker to clear. Arrive 90 minutes before departure. Check-in closes one hour before on jet service and 30 minutes before on the Twin Otter and Saab aircraft, with boarding closing 15 minutes before departure.
